Governmental officials from around the state took time out Monday to remember those who are serving and those who have served in our nation's armed forces.

State Representative Ken Kurtz and State Senator Bruce Caswell spent part of the day in Hillsdale as they took part in the Hillsdale County Veterans Day ceremony at the Hillsdale County Courthouse. Congressman Tim Walberg also took part.

The ceremony featured Ken Benge, veterans affairs director for Hillsdale County.
"Today we pay tribute to the brave men and women that have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and in some cases, made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom," said Walberg. "We are forever indebted to our nation's veterans and offer our thanks for their courage and dedication."

On Friday night Caswell and Kurtz were part of the Veterans Hall of Fame Awards ceremony at the Hillsdale Assembly of God Church. Kurtz presented awards to Timothy S. Guarino for Service Officer of the Year 2012 and Charles R. Scott for Service Officer of the Year 2013.

"I am proud of the longstanding tradition in both Hillsdale and Branch counties of honoring and recognizing all the sacrifices our veterans made for us," said Kurtz.
On Saturday Kurtz attended a retirement of colors ceremony in Coldwater with Boy Scout Troop 433. Today he will welcome Anna Lockwood, the president of the Michigan Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, to the state capitol.

Caswell also spoke with students at Hillsdale Academy Monday morning before traveling to Sturgis for a Veterans Day dinner.

"Thank you to all the Veterans who gave up a part of their life to serve the rest of us," he said. "It's very much appreciated."
